About Waves - an accidental EP I came up with about grief, when I was dealing with the sudden but terminal cancer and eventual death of my most beloved dog, Leif. I lost Leif to advanced lymphoma, and this is all I could do. Music, after all.
I don’t think I am able to perform these songs live. Maybe never. No one can ever tell you how long grief will last. As a matter of fact, no one should ever tell you how and when to feel. Take your time. Just remember, grief comes like waves, if you’re not standing on your feet, you might be swept away and never found again. In time, you might learn to let it become a part of you. You will learn to live again, with a whole new perspective. Or not.
I am sorry, you are all alone in feeling this, but you’re definitely not alone in this world.
Waves come and go. So does life.
Love lifts you up high, pain gives you weight to put your feet on the ground. You are only complete when you have truly experienced loss, but there’s no rush. In the meantime, may these songs give you some comfort, as they did to me.
Love,
Chet Lam

I’ve decided to start writing blogs here every once in a while, hopefully 2-3 times a week. But let’s see if I can keep this up. Let’s start here.
It’s truly amazing where life has taken me in my music career and in life, but it has never been an easy road, and it’s never an easy road for any one of us. I’ve seen how some singer friends hustle, and I’ve seen singer friends get lucky, but working hard has always been the prerequisite to longevity in this field, and talent can come in such different forms. That’s what I’ve seen, and what I find inspiring. The unspoken social hierarchy is one thing, but truly everyone is uniquely talented in their own ways- there’s no lesser or more, just different; and there’s no better or worse, it’s just about effort. And, well, timing, and luck.
For me, I never really fully understood the whole concept of fame, but fan support and individual messages motivated me because it made me feel connected to a bigger purpose. Our music gave hope, comfort, like a friend that knows your heart. For a long time, it felt like it was meant to be. But before R&K, before all that, it was, as it is for most people, just a hobby that was also my self-therapy. My songs have always been a personal thing, a diary entry, if you will, that just gave my own heart comfort. My singing and playing was genuinely just an emotional outlet after stressful days of work, but I took my work with the special needs children very seriously.
I remember one time, after going through a bad long distance breakup over the phone, and with tears just welled up in my eyes, I shakily pressed the doorbell to go to work trying to swallow the emotions back into my stomach. Yes, I used to go up to every apartment of my clients, all across Hong Kong, 3+ hours per session, 11 sessions a week, not including data organizing, prepping, report writing, and chatting to their families, and other meetings. I waited outside at the apartment door of the child that I was the therapist for, and when the swung open, I let out the brightest smile to conceal my tears, but after a while, the child actually made me forget about the emotional pain inside of me; and I was the most cheerful and energetic I’ve ever been. I genuinely cared so much for every child I was the therapist for, even when they sometimes are uncontrollably upset, screaming, kicking, sometimes for the entire session of 3 hours. (Gosh I admire their cardio endurance sometimes.) I have so much admiration for my colleagues who shared my struggles, frustrations, patience, and heart for these children, and a lot of them still do so till today. I still have high regards for their work, because I know it’s not easy. And I’m so happy that one of them finally had the courage and determination to open their own center finally, after talking about it for so many years. 🙂 (Do check them out, if you are curious about their service. Ascend HK 悦晴教育及發展中心)
I wish that truly one day, I could use my platform to share little stories to the world, whether it’s about the kids I’ve taught, little unspoken struggles and hardships during my career, etc.
During difficult times like these, when everything feels kind of pointless and hopeless for most of us, and when everything feels stagnant, and when we, R&K, for whatever reason, cannot share our new song yet (lol. hai. 🤷🏻♀️). But I’m choosing to focus on the parts of my life where I can control. So I just want to share little stories, or thoughts inside my head, because I never really wanted to lose touch with everyone, I guess I just didn’t really know what to say. I just wanna say - it has been emotionally difficult for me also. I’m with you.
But as someone with a little bit of a platform with some number of followers, I want to use it somehow for something meaningful, to spread stories of special needs families’ unconditional love for their children and how it inspires me, stories of struggles and hopes, stories of lessons learned, stories of bridges burned, stories of personal evolution. Some off-camera stuff.
So, excuse my new version of self-therapy. Till the next post. In the mean time, choose love, and bring light. I love you guys.

Skot Suyama 陶山 Vocal
Production Master Workshop
Master Bio:
Skot Suyama 陶山 is a Mandopop record producer best known for penning hit tracks such as Kimberley Chen’s 爱你, R-Chord’s 爱不需要装乖, Yoga Lin’s 感同身受 and many more. Born in Seattle and of Japanese-American ancestry, he came to Taiwan after the success of his first song, Karen Mok and Alan Kuo’s ‘爱死你’ which kickstarted his interest and contributions to the Mandopop scene at large. A well-respected veteran producer within the industry for his ability to write hit songs, Skot has been a direct contributor to many representative works of the contemporary Mandopop scene over the last decade. In the last few years, his passion has led him to start his own record label SKR Music, under which he hopes to hone artistically-sound artists and music which bring Mandopop to the wider world.
Master Workshop Duration: 3 days
1. What is Vocal Production?
What does a vocal producer do?
2. Gear basics. Mic, Pre-Amp, EQ, Compressor
3. Setting up the Pro-Tools session, getting ready for the artist
4. Meeting the artist: getting to know what kind of artist they are, and the psychology of recording an artist. The mental and psychological aspects of a singer
- When to push
- When to listen
- How to read a singer and what they really mean when they complain
- How to get the arrangement super comfortable in the headphones, and balance the reverb, and delay so that the singer can give you their best performance
- The ‘groove’ of a recording session
- How much ‘pre-roll’ to give
- How much time to give between takes for the singer to res their voice
- The different backgrounds of singers and how that effects the recording technique. For example, Singers that developed their skills from Karaoke or singing competitions often like to sing the entire song through to get the right emotion for each part. Singer Songwriter or demo singers who have a recording background usually prefer to go part by part, etc. While seasoned veteran singers may prefer to speed through a recording session either because they’re busy and need to go to their next engagement, or because they already know the power of the computer and vocal editing.
- How long should you chat with a singer before recording? Get to know them and start building trust before you even press record.
- How to keep the singers confidence always high, so you can get the best performance out of them.
- When to make a comment, and when to just let the singer keep singing. What happens to the singer’s confidence when you give a negative comment like ‘You’re out of tune’, or ‘you’re rushing’ etc.
- When to show the artist another way of singing a certain line. And when to give up on your idea.
- How to create a bond with the singer in very short amount of time, so that you both are on the same team and both doing your best for the song
Skill Sharing course:
1. Recording the artist and selecting takes, different approaches to recording the song

If you know me personally, you know I have always had a special place in my heart for Canada, and I was finally back after nearly 2 years, as a spring break vacation. To be honest, I have not felt happy in a long time, I was not being myself at all. But 10 days in Canada, reunited with my really really amazing friends that I don't deserve, I felt happy. I cried so hard at the airport when I had to leave, not because spring break was over & I had to go back to college, but because I felt like I left a piece of me there & my whole entire body hurt so bad. I promise myself that I will try to find a way to come back to Canada every year, at least for the next 10 years (until my visa expires lol).
This is the proudest video I have ever filmed and edited, it took awhile but it's finally here now. I hope you enjoy!
Shoutout to Teeayz for being my personally tour guide and photographer/videographer, Fogii for letting me stay when I literally had no where to go lol and also for keeping me company, Angela for letting me stay at her house (in both Toronto & Kingston), Nishad for literally driving 2 hours just to pick me up and did carpool karaoke with me, Chedy for having Korean food with me, Đức Minh for paying for my noodles when my card got declined lol and also for letting me stay the night when i (again) had nowhere to go smh, Angela's boyfriend & guy friends for being such gentlemen & overall awesome dudes, Angela's mom for being so nice and cooked for me, Peter for being so crazy lol & made me feel welcomed when we literally just met...
I can go on and on and on.. See? This is why I love Canada! All my friends there are the real ones and I appreciate them so much!!!

English Lyrics
Hey, darling, so dear to me
Now, can you try to take me seriously?
Though I know it’s kinda tacky and
You’ll probably laugh at me
But I just don’t know what to say to you
Other than to tell you I love you
There you go, laughing at me again
Making me feel like a fool
Tell me, are you happy?
Is this the road you choose?
Tell me, am I good enough for you?
‘Cause darling, all I know is
*Whether laughing or crying as long as you’re with me
Just being beside you is all I ever need
You give me a reason to keep on looking up
So I’ll give you my heart, as I sing this song of love
Hey, remember that day we met?
What was it that we were talking about?
When I first saw you so long ago
Too shy to ask you out
Well, ever since then look at what we’ve been through
And though we’ve even had a fight or two
Every day we spend together
Brings us closer, me and you
Under this big sky
We found each other here and we
Fell in love, oh, tell me that we’ll be
This way forever
*repeat
I hope you can forgive the constant worry I bring you
The days we’ve spent together are full up to the brim
And every day that I have got you by my side
The feeling’s growing stronger every minute that goes by
I’ll raise my voice high and offer you this silly song
And swear to God above I love you more than anyone
‘Cause I just want to let you know
I’ll hold your hand and won’t let go
As long as my voice lasts, until the day it dies
I’ll keep singing love songs right here by your side, my dear
And when I am old and my voice starts to fray
With my hand in your hand, right next to you I’ll stay
Darling, just saying thank you will never be enough
I wanna spend our lives together, sharing everything
The tears and laughs and joy and sorrow every single day
Forever after, it’ll be the two of us
Darling, so hand-in-hand, let’s sing a song of love
